HAMILTON MALVERN

PAST MEETS PRESENT / A 1970S REWORK

Tucked away in Malvern, this 1970s gem designed by Bates Smart and McCutcheon offered great bones—but needed a full rework to support modern family life. Our clients were downsizing in scale but not in ambition: they wanted to retain the spirit of the home while updating it for their retirement and the next chapter with their young adult daughter still living at home.

We opened up the layout to bring in light, improve flow, and connect the rooms visually and spatially. Clever joinery and thoughtful planning turned modest square meterage into spaces that feel expansive and functional. Every window and room now celebrates the lush green outlooks to the courtyard gardens.

The original wallpapered walls were stripped back and polished concrete finishes added for a more refined feel, anchored by a warm timber-lined fireplace wall. In the bedroom, we relocated the vanity into a proper ensuite—complete with a walk-in shower and smart robe storage—transforming it into a true sanctuary. Neutrals, layered textures, and warm timber tones bring quiet sophistication and a timeless feel.
